Aatrox in League Classic: Legacy Kit and Changes

Classic Aatrox brings back Blood Well, Dark Flight and Massacre: a health-spending fighter who revives on death. Here is the legacy kit, how it compares to today’s Aatrox, and every Classic change since Patch 26.20.

At a glance

Aatrox in League Classic is the original Darkin fighter: Blood Well, Dark Flight and Massacre instead of the greatsword combos you know from the live game. The first thing a live player notices is that his basic abilities cost him health, and that a full Blood Well lets him revive on the spot when he dies. He arrived with the rest of the mode’s legacy roster in Patch 26.20, and you can see who else came back in our League Classic champions overview.

The Classic kit

Classic Aatrox is built around trading his own health for power, then getting it back. Every piece of the kit either spends health, refunds it, or turns him into a faster-hitting auto-attacker.

  • Passive, Blood Well: the health Aatrox pays to cast his basic abilities flows into his Blood Well, which grants him bonus attack speed. If he takes lethal damage, he drains the well and comes back to life where he fell.
  • Q, Dark Flight: he launches into the air and lands on a target area, dealing damage and knocking up everyone caught underneath. This is his engage and his only gap closer.
  • W, Blood Thirst / Blood Price: a toggle that triggers every third basic attack. Blood Thirst heals him, and heals more when his health is low; Blood Price deals extra damage at the cost of some of his own health.
  • E, Blades of Torment: he sends out two projectiles that damage and slow every enemy they pass through, his tool for chasing and for hitting a whole wave.
  • R, Massacre: he damages every enemy champion around him, then gains bonus attack speed and extra attack range for several seconds.

Put together, the loop is simple: fly in with Dark Flight, slow with Blades of Torment, then auto-attack while the W toggle and Massacre do the work. Swapping W between its two modes is the main decision you make mid-fight, depending on whether you need sustain or damage.

Aatrox

New
Passive - Blood Well
Aatrox’s basic abilities damage himself to fill his Blood Well, which gives him bonus attack speed. If he’s killed, he empties his Blood Well to revive on the spot.
Q - Dark Flight
Aatrox flies up and crashes down, damaging and knocking up enemies in the area.
W - Blood Thirst / Blood Price
Toggle between Blood Thirst and Blood Price, each of which have bonus effects every three attacks. Blood Thirst heals Aatrox, increased when he’s low on health. Blood Price deals bonus damage and self-damages.
E - Blades of Torment
Aatrox fires out two projectiles that damage and slow all enemies they touch.
R - Massacre
Aatrox damages all nearby enemy champions and gains bonus attack speed and attack range for several seconds.
MID.GG analysis

This entry brings Aatrox into League Classic with his legacy kit: health-costing basic abilities, a Blood Well revive, a knock-up leap, an on-hit toggle and an area-damage ultimate. He plays as an auto-attack fighter who engages with Dark Flight and sustains through Blood Thirst, nothing like the live combo-based Aatrox.

How it differs from today’s Aatrox

No ability is the same in both versions: every slot on Classic Aatrox has a different name and a different job from the live kit covered in our Aatrox guide. The shared thread is sustain and a combat steroid on R, but how he gets there changes completely.

Passive: revive versus empowered attack

Live Aatrox has Deathbringer Stance, a periodic empowered basic attack that deals bonus magic damage based on the target’s max health and heals him. Classic Blood Well has no empowered hit at all. It gives attack speed and a second life, so the Classic version plays around surviving a lost fight rather than around spacing one empowered auto.

Q: one leap versus three swings

The Darkin Blade is three slams with different hit areas, a skill-shot combo you aim at sweet spots. Dark Flight is a single leap with a knock-up, which makes Classic Q your engage tool rather than your main damage rotation.

W: on-hit toggle versus pull

Infernal Chains hits the first enemy and drags champions and large monsters back to the center if they do not walk out. Blood Thirst / Blood Price has no crowd control; it is an on-hit effect every third attack. The live W sets up your Q, while the Classic W rewards staying in auto-attack range.

E: slowing projectiles versus dash and healing

Umbral Dash is a short dash with passive healing whenever Aatrox damages champions. Blades of Torment is a pair of slowing projectiles with no movement. Classic Aatrox loses the repositioning but gains a slow, and his healing moves to the W toggle instead of sitting on E.

R: area damage and range versus a demonic form

World Ender fears nearby minions and grants attack damage, increased healing and Move Speed, extended on takedowns. Massacre opens with damage to every nearby champion and then boosts attack speed and attack range. The live ultimate is a scaling duel buff; the Classic one is an instant teamfight hit followed by an auto-attack window.

Classic patch history

Classic Aatrox has received one balance change since arriving, a buff in Patch 26.21 aimed at top lane more than jungle. Blood Well’s revive cooldown, a flat 225s on arrival, now shortens as he levels: 225s at level 1, down to 150s at level 16. The early game is untouched, but a late-game Aatrox gets his second life back far more often, which makes forcing fights around his revive a stronger plan. Aatrox

Buffed
Riot’s reasoning

The Blood Well cooldown now scales down with level to give Aatrox more late-game strength and tankiness, aimed at top lane rather than jungle, using tuning from 2014 and 2015 before his 2017 minor rework.

PassiveBlood Well

Cooldown
225schanged to 225 / 200 / 175 / 150s (Levels 1 / 6 / 11 / 16)
MID.GG analysis

The revive no longer sits on a flat 225s cooldown; by level 16 it is back in 150s. Early lane fights are unchanged, but late teamfights can be forced around his second life far more often, which favors a top laner who reaches high levels over a jungler.

Frequently asked questions

What is different about Aatrox in League Classic?

Classic Aatrox uses his legacy kit. Instead of Deathbringer Stance, The Darkin Blade, Infernal Chains, Umbral Dash and World Ender, he has Blood Well, Dark Flight, Blood Thirst / Blood Price, Blades of Torment and Massacre. He pays health to cast basic abilities, toggles an on-hit stance, and can revive on the spot by emptying his Blood Well.

Does Aatrox still revive in League Classic?

Yes. Classic Aatrox has Blood Well, the passive that stores the health his basic abilities cost him and spends it to revive him on the spot when he dies. Since Patch 26.21 its cooldown drops with level, from 225s at level 1 to 150s at level 16, so late-game revives come around much more often.

When did Aatrox arrive in League Classic?

Aatrox joined League Classic in Patch 26.20, which added him with his legacy kit: Blood Well, Dark Flight, Blood Thirst / Blood Price, Blades of Torment and Massacre. His first Classic balance change came one patch later, in Patch 26.21, a buff that shortened the Blood Well revive cooldown as he levels up.

Is there a recommended build for Classic Aatrox?

No. League Classic has no statistics, so there are no win rates, pick rates, tiers or builds for Classic Aatrox, and MID.GG does not recommend one. The builds and runes on our Aatrox pages cover the live champion, whose kit is completely different from the legacy version played in League Classic.
