Mordekaiser League Classic: Legacy Kit and Changes

Classic Mordekaiser brings back the legacy kit: ability damage that turns into a shield, an ally-buffing shrapnel swarm and a ghost-raising ultimate. Here is what each ability does and how it compares with the live champion.

At a glance

Mordekaiser in League Classic is the legacy version of the Iron Revenant: a melee caster who turns his ability damage into a shield, shares a damaging shrapnel swarm with allies and curses a target to steal its stats. The first thing a live player notices is what is missing. There is no pull and no duel in another dimension, and a kill under his ultimate leaves the enemy behind as a ghost he controls.

He joined the mode in Patch 26.21, alongside the rest of the League Classic champions that bring older kits back to Summoner’s Rift.

The Classic kit

League Classic Mordekaiser abilities are built around sustained damage close to the enemy. Every piece of the kit either hits whatever is near him or rewards him for staying on a target, and his defense comes almost entirely from dealing damage.

  • Passive, Iron Man: damage from his abilities feeds a shield that wears off over time, so trading with spells is also how he stays healthy.
  • Q, Mace of Spades: his next basic attack becomes a strike that hits several enemies around him, with bonus damage if the main target has no other enemies nearby.
  • W, Creeping Death: he places a cloud of shrapnel on an ally, which raises that ally’s armor and MR and damages enemies close to them over its duration.
  • E, Siphon of Destruction: a plain cone of magic damage in front of him, with no extra effect attached.
  • R, Children of the Grave: he curses one enemy champion, dealing damage over time and draining their stats into himself; if the cursed champion dies, its spirit rises as a ghost under his control.

MID.GG analysis

This entry adds the legacy kit to League Classic, with a passive shield fed by ability damage, an empowered attack, an ally-targeted shrapnel buff, a damage cone and a ghost-raising curse. It plays as a close-range brawler with team utility on W rather than the isolating duelist of the live game, since no ability pulls enemies or separates a target from its team.

How it differs from today’s Mordekaiser

Classic Mordekaiser and the live champion share a theme, not a kit: none of the five abilities is the same in both versions. A few ideas carry over, such as a shield, punishing isolated targets and stealing stats, but each one sits on a different button or works in a different way. If you want the live kit in detail, the Mordekaiser guide covers it.

Passive: shield instead of an aura

The Classic passive is the shield. Today’s passive, Darkness Rise, does something else entirely: after three hits with attacks or spells on champions or monsters, he gains a damage aura and bonus movement speed. The shield idea still exists in the live game, but it moved to his W.

Q: an empowered attack instead of a smash

Both versions reward you for catching a lone target. The difference is delivery. Classic Mace of Spades upgrades a basic attack and hits enemies around him, while live Obliterate is a ground smash aimed in an area, with more damage when it strikes only one enemy.

W: an ally buff instead of a self shield

This is the biggest change in role. Classic Creeping Death can go on a teammate, giving them armor and MR plus a damage aura, which gives the old kit real utility for a carry or a frontliner diving in. Live Indestructible is purely selfish: it banks damage he deals and takes into a shield that he can cash in for healing.

E: damage instead of a pull

Classic Siphon of Destruction is just a damage cone. Live Death’s Grasp pulls every enemy in an area toward him. Going by the ability text, the Classic kit has no displacement at all, so you have to walk into range rather than drag targets to you.

R: a curse and a ghost instead of a duel

Stat theft survives in both ultimates. Classic Children of the Grave curses the target in place, damages it over time and turns it into a controllable ghost if it dies while cursed. Today’s R instead pulls the victim into a separate dimension for a one-on-one fight, and a kill lets him keep the stolen stats until that champion respawns.

Key takeawayWhat changes for a live Mordekaiser player

Expect to play the old kit as a brawler who stays in range, not a duelist who isolates.

  1. Your shield comes from landing abilities, so keep your spells hitting during a fight.
  2. Your W is for teammates as well as yourself, which the live kit never offers.
  3. Your ultimate leaves the target on the map with its team, and a kill gives you a ghost rather than a duel win.

Classic patch history

Nothing has changed yet: Classic Mordekaiser has received no balance adjustments since he arrived in Patch 26.21, so the kit above is the one in the mode today. Any future tuning will appear in the card below and in the patch notes.

Frequently asked questions

What is different about Mordekaiser in League Classic?

Every ability differs from the live kit. Classic Mordekaiser shields himself through ability damage on his passive, empowers an attack with Q, buffs an ally with W, deals cone damage with E, and curses a target with his ultimate, raising it as a ghost if it dies. He has no pull and no separate dimension.

Is Children of the Grave back in League Classic?

Yes. Classic Mordekaiser’s ultimate is Children of the Grave. It curses an enemy champion, damages it over time and steals its stats. If the cursed champion dies, its spirit rises as a ghost that Mordekaiser controls. The live ultimate instead takes the victim into another dimension for a one-on-one fight.

When did Mordekaiser arrive in League Classic?

Mordekaiser joined League Classic in Patch 26.21, which added his legacy kit to the mode. That patch listed his old passive, Iron Man, and the abilities Mace of Spades, Creeping Death, Siphon of Destruction and Children of the Grave. He has received no Classic balance changes since he arrived.

Is there a Classic Mordekaiser build or tier list?

No. League Classic has no statistics of any kind, so there are no win rates, pick rates, tiers, builds or runes for Classic Mordekaiser. Any build you see for the mode is a personal opinion rather than data. Build and stat pages for the live champion do not apply to the legacy kit.

Does Classic Mordekaiser have a pull?

No. In League Classic his E, Siphon of Destruction, only deals magic damage in a cone in front of him. The pull belongs to today’s E, Death’s Grasp. Going by the Classic ability text, none of the legacy abilities moves enemies, so you have to close the distance yourself.
