Olaf in League Classic: Legacy Kit and Changes

Classic Olaf trades today’s Tough It Out for Vicious Strikes, a bonus attack damage W, and arrived in Patch 26.22 with a buff to it and a shorter Reckless Swing cooldown.

Olaf in League Classic at a glance

Olaf in League Classic is the older berserker, and the first thing a live-game player notices is his W. Today’s Tough It Out gives attack speed and a shield, while Classic Olaf runs Vicious Strikes, an ability that hands him bonus attack damage instead. He joined the League Classic champion pool in Patch 26.22, and that same patch already tuned him upward.

The short version: Classic Olaf hits harder per swing rather than faster, and he gets his E back sooner than he did before the buff.

League Classic Olaf abilities: the legacy kit

The Classic notes for Olaf cover two abilities, not his full kit. There is no entry that introduces the whole legacy kit, so what follows comes only from the balance lines, and Olaf has been in the mode since Patch 26.22, the first Classic patch we have for him.

  • W, Vicious Strikes: a flat bonus attack damage ability that scales with rank. After the 26.22 buff it gives 10 bonus attack damage at rank 1 and 38 at rank 5. The notes list only the attack damage value, so treat any other effects you remember from older versions as unconfirmed for the mode.
  • E, Reckless Swing: the same name as the live E. The Classic notes list only its cooldown, which now runs from 8 seconds at rank 1 down to 4 seconds at rank 5.
  • Q, passive and R: the Classic entries say nothing about them, so their Classic versions cannot be described from the notes.
Good to knowWhat the card shows

The kit card below prints Riot’s own lines for Vicious Strikes and Reckless Swing. It lists stat values, not full ability descriptions, so the shape of each ability beyond those numbers is not part of the record.

How Classic Olaf differs from today’s Olaf

The W is the clear difference. Live Olaf’s Tough It Out raises his attack speed and gives him a shield, which pushes him toward fast autos and staying alive through burst. Classic Vicious Strikes is a bonus attack damage tool, so each auto and each damage source that scales with attack damage gets bigger instead. If you play the live version from our Olaf guide, expect fewer defensive tools on W and more raw damage.

Reckless Swing shares its name across both versions. On live servers it deals true damage to the target and to Olaf, and refunds the health cost if the target dies. The Classic notes only confirm its cooldown, so whether the Classic swing behaves the same way is not stated; what is stated is that it comes back fast, down to 4 seconds at rank 5.

For the rest of the kit, the notes give no comparison point. Live Olaf has Berserker Rage on his passive (attack speed and life steal from missing health), Undertow on Q (an axe throw that cuts armor and move speed, with a cooldown reset on pickup) and Ragnarok on R (passive armor and magic resist, active immunity to disables while he keeps attacking). None of these appear in the Classic entries, so no difference can be confirmed for them.

The live kit’s numbers and builds live on the live Olaf stats and builds page; they apply to Summoner’s Rift as it is today, not to League Classic.

Olaf’s Classic patch history

Classic Olaf has one balance entry, a buff in Patch 26.22, the patch that brought him to the mode. It raised the bonus attack damage on Vicious Strikes at every rank and shortened Reckless Swing’s cooldown at every rank, both aimed at his sustained damage, with values pulled from his 2011 and 2012 versions. No later Classic change appears in the notes; check the patch notes hub for future entries.

Riot’s reasoning

Olaf had fallen behind other top laners and junglers, so the change leans into his sustained damage using values taken from his 2011 and 2012 versions.

MID.GG analysis

The buff adds bonus attack damage to Vicious Strikes at every rank and shortens Reckless Swing’s cooldown at every rank, reaching 38 bonus attack damage and a 4-second cooldown at rank 5. Both changes push Classic Olaf toward extended trades where he keeps swinging rather than burst windows. Because it landed in the patch that added him, this buffed version is the only Classic Olaf players have seen.

Frequently asked questions

What is different about Olaf in League Classic?

Classic Olaf swaps today’s W, Tough It Out, for Vicious Strikes, an ability that gives him bonus attack damage instead of attack speed and a shield. He keeps Reckless Swing on E, with a cooldown that drops to 4 seconds at rank 5. The Classic notes do not list changes to his Q, passive or R.

Is Vicious Strikes back for Olaf in League Classic?

Yes. Classic Olaf’s W is Vicious Strikes, which grants bonus attack damage by rank. Patch 26.22 raised that bonus at every rank, from 7 to 35 before the change to 10 to 38 after it. Today’s live Olaf uses Tough It Out on W instead, which trades the damage for attack speed and a shield.

When did Olaf come to League Classic?

Olaf arrived in League Classic in Patch 26.22. The same patch also carried his first Classic balance change, a buff that raised the bonus attack damage on Vicious Strikes and shortened the cooldown of Reckless Swing at every rank. No later Classic changes for him appear in the notes.

Is there a best build for Olaf in League Classic?

No build data exists for League Classic. The mode has no win rates, pick rates or tier lists, so any Classic Olaf build would be a guess. What the notes do show is a kit leaning on bonus attack damage from Vicious Strikes and a short Reckless Swing cooldown.
