Rammus in League Classic: Legacy Kit and Changes

Classic Rammus arrived in Patch 26.22 and took a base stat nerf in the same patch. Here is what his Classic entry says about the kit and how it sets against today’s Rammus.

Rammus in League Classic at a glance

Rammus in League Classic is the armored jungle tank brought back in an earlier form, and he arrived in the mode in Patch 26.22. The thing a live-game Rammus player notices first is that his Classic version started life with a base stat nerf in that same patch. He has less armor and grows his attack damage more slowly than he did before it.

Armor still matters more on Rammus than on almost anyone. It feeds both his damage and the damage he reflects back at attackers. That is why a cut to one defensive stat lands on his offense too. For the full roster of returning champions, see League Classic champions.

The Classic kit

Riot’s Classic notes for Rammus do not include an introduction entry with his legacy ability text. His only entry is a balance change. Rammus has been in the mode since Patch 26.22, the first Classic patch on record for him. Everything below comes from what that entry reveals about how the kit works.

  • Armor turns into damage. The notes treat base armor as a lever on his attack damage, so his passive-style scaling from armor is part of the Classic kit.
  • W reflects damage. His defensive curl returns damage to enemies who hit him, and that returned damage also depends on his armor.
  • Attack damage growth per level is a tuned base stat, separate from the armor scaling, so his auto attacks gain power both from leveling and from stacking armor.

The notes say nothing about his Q, E or R in Classic. Treat any claim about how those abilities differ as unconfirmed until a Classic entry covers them.

How it differs from today’s Rammus

Where the Classic notes speak, they match the live kit in principle. The difference you can confirm is in base stats, not ability design. Ability by ability, this is how the live kit lines up with what the Classic entry shows.

  • Passive, Spiked Shell: live Rammus gains bonus attack damage from armor and magic resist. The Classic entry confirms the armor link and does not mention magic resist either way.
  • Q, Powerball: live Rammus rolls toward enemies to damage and slow them on impact. The Classic notes do not describe this ability, so no difference is confirmed.
  • W, Defensive Ball Curl: live Rammus gains large amounts of armor and magic resist and returns damage to attackers. The Classic entry confirms the damage return and its armor dependence, so the core behavior is the same.
  • E, Frenzying Taunt: live Rammus taunts a champion or monster into attacking him. The Classic notes are silent here.
  • R, Soaring Slam: live Rammus leaps to an area to deal magic damage and slow, adding a knock-up near the center when cast during Powerball. The Classic notes do not cover his ultimate.

For the live version’s abilities, combos and jungle plan, the Rammus guide covers the current kit. The Rammus stats and builds page holds data for live Summoner’s Rift only, not for Classic.

Classic patch history

Classic Rammus has one balance entry, a nerf in Patch 26.22, the same patch he arrived in. Base armor dropped from 28.8 to 25, and attack damage per level dropped from 3.5 to 2.75. The armor cut is the bigger hit. It makes him softer before items, lowers the attack damage he converts from armor, and weakens the damage his W reflects. The per-level cut then slows how fast his autos grow as he levels through the jungle.

Rammus

Nerfed
Riot’s reasoning

The base armor and attack damage growth cuts target a jungler judged to be among the strongest in the mode, with the armor reduction expected to do most of the work because it lowers both his attack damage and his W’s returned damage.

Base Stats

Base Armor
28.8changed to 25
Attack Damage per Level
3.5changed to 2.75
MID.GG analysis

This is a nerf that hits Classic Rammus twice with one stat, since armor drives his defense, his armor-based damage and his W reflection. Starting at 25 armor instead of 28.8 makes early clears and contested skirmishes riskier. The cut from 3.5 to 2.75 attack damage per level then trims his auto-attack growth across the whole game.

Key takeawayWhat the 26.22 nerf means in game

The cut hits Classic Rammus at both ends because one stat drives his defense and his damage.

  1. Expect less durability in early camps and skirmishes, since his starting armor is lower.
  2. Expect your W to punish attackers a little less, because its returned damage reads from armor.
  3. Expect your autos to fall behind slightly across every level from the smaller per-level gain.

Future Classic changes will appear in the patch notes hub as Riot publishes them.

Frequently asked questions

What is different about Rammus in League Classic?

The Classic notes for Rammus show base stat changes rather than a full legacy ability list. The clearest difference is numbers: after Patch 26.22 he starts with 25 base armor instead of 28.8 and gains 2.75 attack damage per level instead of 3.5. Armor still feeds his damage and his W still returns damage to attackers.

When did Rammus arrive in League Classic?

Rammus arrived in League Classic in Patch 26.22. His only recorded Classic balance change appears in that same patch, a nerf to base armor and attack damage growth. No separate entry introducing his legacy kit is in the notes, so 26.22 is the earliest Classic patch we can confirm for him.

Has Classic Rammus been nerfed?

Yes. In Patch 26.22 Classic Rammus lost base armor, dropping from 28.8 to 25, and his attack damage per level fell from 3.5 to 2.75. His damage and his Defensive Ball Curl’s returned damage both rely on armor, so the cut weakens his durability and his damage output at the same time, especially early.

Is there a Rammus Classic build or tier list?

No. League Classic has no statistics of any kind, so there are no win rates, tiers, builds or runes for Classic Rammus. Any list claiming otherwise is guesswork. For data-backed builds, use the live-game Rammus pages instead, and treat Classic as its own mode with its own base stats and tuning.
