Volibear League Classic: Legacy Kit and Changes

Volibear joined League Classic in Patch 26.22 with his original kit: the flip, Frenzy, Majestic Roar and chain-lightning Thunder Claws. Here is what each ability does and how it compares to the live bear.

At a glance

Volibear in League Classic is the original bear: a fast, attack-speed-driven bruiser who runs you down, throws you over his head and finishes you with a missing-health bite. The first thing a live player notices is the Q, which flips the target behind Volibear instead of stunning it in place. He arrived in League Classic in Patch 26.22, and you can see him next to the rest of the roster on our League Classic champions list.

The Classic kit

The legacy kit is built around short, close-range fights with almost no way to reach a target except running at it. Every ability either speeds Volibear up, adds damage to his basic attacks or rewards him for staying on top of one enemy.

  • Passive, Chosen of the Storm: when Volibear drops to low health, he regenerates a share of his maximum health over a few seconds. The long cooldown means it saves him once per fight, not every skirmish.
  • Q, Rolling Thunder: a burst of movement speed that grows while he heads toward enemy champions. His next attack hits harder and tosses the target over his head, so a successful Q drags the enemy behind Volibear and toward his team or turret.
  • W, Frenzy: a passive stack of attack speed that builds with each attack. Once fully stacked, he can activate it for a heavy single-target hit that grows stronger the lower the target’s health.
  • E, Majestic Roar: a roar around Volibear that damages and slows nearby enemies. Minions and monsters also run away in fear.
  • R, Thunder Claws: for several seconds, each basic attack sends chain lightning bouncing to nearby targets.

The pattern is clear: Q to close and reposition, a few attacks to stack Frenzy, then W to execute. Thunder Claws turns those same attacks into area damage in a teamfight. Riot’s own ability lines for this kit appear on the card below.

Volibear

New
Passive - Chosen of the Storm
When reduced to low health, Volibear heals for a portion of his maximum health over time. This effect has a long cooldown.
Q - Rolling Thunder
Volibear gains bonus movement speed, increased while running toward enemy champions. His next attack deals bonus damage and flips his target over his head.
W - Frenzy
Volibear passively gains stacking bonus attack speed on-attack. While at max stacks, Frenzy can be activated to deal high single-target damage, increased based on their missing health.
E - Majestic Roar
Volibear damages and slows nearby enemies. Minions and monsters are additionally feared.
R - Thunder Claws
Volibear harnesses the power of the storm for several seconds, causing all basic attacks to inflict chain lightning.
MID.GG analysis

This entry brings Volibear into League Classic with his full legacy kit: the low-health heal, the flip on Q, the stack-gated Frenzy execute, Majestic Roar and chain-lightning Thunder Claws. It makes him a melee attack-speed fighter with no leap or ranged ability, so every engage starts with the Q speed boost and ends with Frenzy on a low target.

How it differs from today’s Volibear

Every ability is different from the live kit, though the Q keeps the same core job. The biggest shift is where the power sits: Classic Volibear does his work through basic attacks and a single execute, while the live version in our Volibear guide has a ranged lightning bolt, a dive ultimate and sustain on his W.

Passive: emergency heal vs. storm stacks

Chosen of the Storm is a once-per-fight safety net that heals at low health. Today’s The Relentless Storm has no heal at all; it stacks attack speed from attacks and abilities and eventually adds magic damage to nearby enemies. In effect, the live passive absorbs the old W’s attack speed and the old R’s lightning.

Q: the flip vs. the stun

Both Rolling Thunder and Thundering Smash give Volibear speed toward enemies and empower his next attack. The difference is the crowd control: the Classic Q flips the target over his head, changing its position, while the live Q stuns it where it stands. The flip is a positioning tool as much as a lockdown, so where you land the attack matters more in Classic.

W: stacked execute vs. mark and heal

Frenzy is locked until Volibear has hit enough attacks to max his stacks, then pays off with damage based on the target’s missing health. Frenzied Maul is available immediately, applies on-hit effects, marks the target and heals Volibear on the second cast. The Classic W rewards finishing a low target; the live one rewards repeated trades.

E: self-centered roar vs. ranged bolt

Majestic Roar hits only around Volibear and fears minions and monsters. Sky Splitter drops a lightning bolt at a target location and shields him if he stands inside it. Classic Volibear has to be in melee range for his slow to land and gets no shield from it.

R: chain lightning vs. leap and tower disable

Thunder Claws is a duration buff that adds chain lightning to his attacks, with no movement attached. Stormbringer is a leap that slows, grants bonus health and temporarily disables nearby turrets. Without that leap or tower disable, Classic Volibear cannot force a dive the way the live bear does; he has to walk in with Q and fight on the spot.

Key takeawayPlaying Classic Volibear as a live main

Your live habits need three adjustments.

  1. Your only gap-closer is the Q speed boost, so start running before the fight, not after it.
  2. Save Frenzy for a target already in execute range rather than opening with it.
  3. Plan around one emergency heal per fight, because your W no longer heals you.

Classic patch history

Classic Volibear has not been changed since he arrived in Patch 26.22, so the kit above is exactly the one that launched. Any future Classic balance changes will appear here and in our patch notes.

Frequently asked questions

What is different about Volibear in League Classic?

Classic Volibear uses his original kit. His passive is a low-health heal on a long cooldown, his Q flips a target over his head instead of stunning, his W is a missing-health strike unlocked by attack speed stacks, his E is a roar around him, and his R charges his attacks with chain lightning.

Is the old Volibear flip back in League Classic?

Yes. Rolling Thunder, the Q from the legacy kit, is back in League Classic. It gives Volibear bonus movement speed that grows while he runs at enemy champions, and his next attack deals bonus damage and throws the target over his head, moving them behind him rather than stunning them in place.

When did Volibear arrive in League Classic?

Volibear arrived in League Classic in Patch 26.22, which added him to the mode with his legacy kit: Chosen of the Storm, Rolling Thunder, Frenzy, Majestic Roar and Thunder Claws. No Classic balance changes have followed yet, so the version you play is the one that launched.

Is there a Classic Volibear build?

No. League Classic has no published statistics, so there is no data-backed Classic Volibear build, rune page or tier to point to, and MID.GG does not estimate one. What the patch notes do describe is the kit itself, which leans on attack speed, on-attack damage and short, close-range fights.
